Fraudsters Target Victims with Deepfake Voices

Sharjah Police's General Command has confirmed that "deepfake" crimes by AI are one of the newest cybercrimes, and the danger lies in employing the vulnerable and fraudsters of these techniques to disfigure other characters to tempt their victims.
This came during Sharjah Police General Command's participation in the third Military Police Exhibition for Combating Drugs and Cybercrime 2024. The exhibition was opened last Monday by Land Forces Commander Major General Staff Yousef Mayouf Al Hallami, accompanied by the UAE Government's Head of Cybersecurity, Dr Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, in the presence of senior Ministry of Defence and security officials. It continues until 5 March.
Sharjah Police Directorate-General has finally designed an AI deepfake video, where the clip features a conversation between two people whose vocal cords have been used to produce similar audio content with artificial intelligence, with the aim of raising awareness of the seriousness of these crimes, warning that these techniques can be used by fraudsters and the faint of heart.
For his part, cybersecurity expert Sami A Nour revealed that scammers are targeting through deepfake, collecting images and sounds from social media footage to use sound layers and fake clips attributed to the owners of those voices.
He added to "Emarat Al Youm": "Scampers can use this technology to fake their children's voices, to correspond with their schoolmates, for example, or on a trip, and if their phone is turned off or they don't have a phone, and ask them to pay a financial sum to buy a product, in order to transfer money to the scammer's account".
He urged caution about regularly posting video clips on social media, especially videos of children, as these could enable fraudsters to deceive parents using AI-generated deepfakes.
Sharjah's Kine Aware Police Platform during the military police anti-drug and cybercrime exhibition 2024, will be presenting six interactive stations, namely the Cyber Extortion Station, the Telephone Fraud Station, the Cyber Fraud Station, the Transformation Station, the Cyber Hacking Station, and the Interactive E-Games Station, as well as the Cyber Stop Corner where informational programs are organized. Most importantly: "Deepfake crimes are among the latest cybercrimes at the moment, and the platform also includes an interactive awareness-raising area aimed at measuring the impact of the platform's visitors on the security information they learned during their journey through the platform's previous stations, by broadcasting messages and questions that enable them to complete the interactive game stages. The Directorate of Investigation and Criminal Investigation (DIRC), Prosecutor Mohammad Ahmed Khmery, stressed that the General Command of Sharjah Police is eager to participate in various security events and exhibitions organized in the state, enhancing awareness among community members and protecting them from becoming victims of drugs and cybercrimes, spreading awareness culture, preserving the security of digital life and its stability for different segments of society.
