Juma Al Majid Centre Discusses Digital Data Protection

The Juma Al Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage in Dubai held an online lecture entitled ‘Protecting Digital Data from Privacy Violations’, delivered by cybersecurity consultant and digital awareness expert Sami A Nour. It aimed to promote awareness of digital privacy and the need to safeguard personal data and control its availability to reduce leaks and unauthorised access. The lecture covered digital privacy concepts and policies, cookies and their effects on personal data, with practical examples from applications including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok. Its 261 online participants took part in exercises to discover whether their personal information had been leaked globally. They also explored recent social media privacy settings, safe browsing and blocking pop-up advertisements. Sami A Nour said: ‘We live in a world of constant changes and updates. Data privacy has become a necessity, not an option, particularly following the introduction of the UAE Personal Data Protection Law, which came into effect on 2 January 2022 and safeguards individuals’ rights.’ He stressed that people must protect their own data, configure privacy controls and share only what is necessary for a transaction to reduce the risk of leaks, hacking, identity theft and intrusive marketing calls.
